Newcastle United are close to agreeing a new contract with star midfielder Bruno Guimarães in a bid to fend off interest from Real Madrid and Liverpool.

Chelsea and Liverpool inquired about signing the 25-year-old in the last two transfer windows, but were immediately told that the player was not for sale at any price. Real Madrid are also keeping a close eye on the player given the huge impact he has made on the Premier League since his arrival from Lyon in January 2022 for an initial £38m, which could rise to £43m with additional costs .
One of the sticking points in the protracted negotiations is believed to be whether a waiver clause will be included in the new agreement.

If the release clause is agreed, sources have stressed it would be well in excess of £100 million to deter potential buyers.

By his own high standards, Bruno has not been at his best as Newcastle have made a slow start to the Premier League , having suffered three defeats in his first four games.
But he remains an integral part of the team's style of play under Howe and fans will be pleased that he is close to signing a contract extension. Bruno was already one of the highest paid players at St James' Park but is now likely to join captain Kieran Trippier on a salary of around £120,000 a week.
