The GLC Elektro will essentially become a separate model in the Mercedes-Benz line and will not be technically related to the “hydrocarbon” versions.
In May of this year, Mercedes-Benz quietly completed production of the EQC electric crossover: it debuted in 2018 and became the first-born of the “green” EQ line, but, unfortunately, failed in the market due to a not very successful design. The history of the entire EQ family, as it turned out earlier this year, will also be short-lived: according to insiders, Mercedes-Benz management decided to abandon the EQ labeling of electric models after 2024, since they no longer see the point in it, because by 2030 everything Mercedes-Benz models will become electric in most markets, so it is easier to use the familiar, classic markings.
Mercedes-Benz EQC < p>The Mercedes-Benz EQC’s place in the lineup is still vacant; the company no longer wants to make an electric conversion from a “hydrocarbon” model. Let us recall that the current second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLC (X 254) debuted in the summer of 2022, and last spring a coupe-shaped version with the Coupe prefix and the factory index C 254 was presented — both versions are built on the modular MRA platform.
The electric GLC, as reported by the German magazine auto motor und sport, will receive the MB.EA (Mercedes-Benz Electric Architecture) platform, designed for mid-size and large electric models of the next generation Mercedes-Benz. German colleagues call the upcoming new product GLC Elektro, but the actual commercial name may be different at the time of launch. The launch is scheduled for 2026, the main assembly site for the GLC Elektro will be the American Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa (Alabama), which currently produces the larger electric crossovers EQE SUV and EQS SUV — both built on the EVA platform.

Mercedes-Benz EQC was produced in Germany and China, in these same countries today the bulk of GLC crossovers are produced, but the GLC Elektro will be sent for assembly in the USA in order to receive generous subsidies from the American government in as part of the federal Inflation Reduction Act adopted last year.
The GLC Elektro, unlike the EQC, is expected to become one of the most popular and successful electric models from Mercedes-Benz. The MB.EA platform promises an 800-volt electrical architecture and some advanced technical solutions that we have yet to learn about.
