It is assumed that the new product may turn out to be an electric sports crossover, which will be named ID.9.
Large The Volkswagen Phaeton sedan lasted only one generation on the assembly line: the competitor Mercedes-Benz S-Class appeared in 2002 and left the assembly line in 2016. At the same time, the German company was working on a project for a second-generation four-door (VW showed a pre-production running model last summer), but such a car never made it to production. It is possible that the model will still have an indirect heir in the future.

The German manufacturer has recently experienced difficulties selling its electric vehicles: demand was not as high as Volkswagen expected. As a result, the company had to temporarily stop production of the ID.3, while even the spring restyling did not help to increase customer interest. Despite these problems, the brand continues to develop its green family. Thus, at the beginning of this month, VW announced projects to create an all-electric Golf, the long-awaited flagship Trinity and the as-yet unnamed mass “electric crossover” A-class.

It is possible that the list of upcoming new products will include another “green” crossover, but it will belong to the premium segment and have a sporty appearance. According to preliminary data, this model may be called Volkswagen ID.9. It is expected that such an electric car could take the place of the flagship crossover of the German brand. According to rumors, it may turn out to be the indirect heir to the large VW Phaeton sedan that has sunk into oblivion.

Of course, there is no official information about the potential new product yet. The designer of the Spanish publication Motor.es shared his vision of what the future flagship crossover Volkswagen ID.9 might look like. Probably, such a model will have a coupe-shaped body, and its length will exceed five meters. Judging by the rendering, the electric car can get a black roof and exterior mirror housings, as well as a laconic body kit around the perimeter of the body made of glossy black plastic.

The car in the image also has stampings on the sloping hood, relatively rustic headlights with LED thin stripes, and the headlights are connected to each other by a chrome strip, in the center of which is the brand logo. A large air intake with a pattern of several horizontal lines is integrated into the lower part of the front bumper. The sides were decorated with recessed door handles and black central roof pillars.
It is expected that the basis of the future The Volkswagen ID.9 will be based on one of the versions of the modular MEB platform; this “trolley” will probably be an evolution of the MEB Plus. The publication suggested that the car will have several versions, but all of them will be all-wheel drive. According to assumptions, the total output of the power plant will be no less than 300 hp; The capacity of the traction battery will be equal to 120 kWh, and the range on one charge will exceed 800 km.
According to preliminary data, the flagship crossover Volkswagen ID.9 will debut in 2026, and will be on sale in will appear on the European market in 2027.
