Photo: Joe Giddens /PA < p>Talking to Tory MPs in recent months, you would be hard-pressed to find a single one, even the Prime Minister's fiercest critics, who would support the move.
The reason? Even Mr Sunak's harshest critics have to ask this question: Do I really think we have a better chance of winning the election by changing the leader again?
The almost universal answer to this question so far has been negative — an acknowledgment of voters' rage at Liz Truss's retaliatory premiership and two leadership changes in a year in 2022.
But in the coming months this could be discussed in whispers more often if the polls do not move.
But then who? For those still dreaming of Boris Johnson's return, this option is not available. The former prime minister is no longer in parliament, so he was unable to become leader. There is no consensus on any other potential leader.
This is not Armageddon yet. It could be another year before the next elections.
Polls and public sentiment may change. But as the day of judgment approaches, there are no easy options on earth for how to achieve political salvation, and there are no signs that it is approaching.
