ST. PETERSBURG, 5 DecThe caftan of Peter I was restored at the State Hermitage with funds raised from the sale of stickers depicting the emperor on the VKontakte social network, the museum reported.
It is noted that this was a joint project of the Hermitage and VKontakte. In honor of the 350th anniversary of Peter the Great, VK released stickers with the image of the emperor, which anyone could purchase.

“»In five months, we managed to collect 3 million rubles. All proceeds went to the restoration of the historical caftan of Peter I from the Hermitage collection,» the message says.
Made in the 1710s, the caftan belongs to the group of so-called “Saxon” costumes of Peter I. They were sewn in the French fashion from high-quality cloth, decorated with braid and fur.
The restoration of the costume was carried out by the Laboratory for the Scientific Restoration of Fabrics and Water-Soluble Paintings of the Department of Scientific Restoration and Conservation of the Hermitage. The work took place in several stages: analysis of the safety of the caftan, cleaning, removal of old restoration materials and strengthening of the fabric.
It is noted that the original fur trim, braid and some buttons of the caftan were lost, however, using electron microscopy of single surviving hairs, Hermitage specialists were able to determine that sable fur was used for decoration. After restoration, the caftan of Peter I regained its original appearance.
