Russian scientists have studied heat flows inside the human body

MOSCOW, December 19. Omsk State Technical University scientists together with colleagues from Omsk State University. F.M. Dostoevsky conducted an experimental study of the density of heat flows of the human body using special sensors. In their opinion, the development can already be used in the production of “smart” clothing for professional athletes, and in the future it can become an aid for monitoring the internal temperature of various human organs during operations under general anesthesia. The results were published in the collection «2023 IEEE Ural-Siberian Conference on Biomedical Engineering, Radioelectronics and Information Technology (USBEREIT)».
The sensors themselves, proposed by scientists from Omsk State Technical University (OMSTU), are designed on the principle of an “additional wall”: they are superimposed on the surface under study and determine the heat transfer coefficients of these areas. The heat flow passing through the sensor creates a temperature gradient in it and a corresponding thermoelectric signal.

“Heat transfer from local areas of the body fully characterizes the human thermoregulation system, which ensures his life,” said the professor of the Department of Radio Engineering Devices and Diagnostic Systems. Omsk State Technical University Alexander Kozlov.

He added that sensors of this type can be used in conjunction with thermal imaging installations to study thermal processes both on the surface of the human body, and to obtain additional information about processes inside the body, for example in the peripheral circulatory system.

In his opinion, the project is currently of great practical importance for the development of clothing with certain consumer and industrial properties (sportswear, protective clothing, industrial clothing) and the study of heat exchange reactions of the body to changes in external conditions.

According to the professor, in the future, developments in determining heat flux density may have extensive application in medicine. In particular, the sensors can be used to determine the microcirculation of blood in the lower extremities in diabetes to monitor complications (diabetic foot) and to measure the internal temperature of the brain during various operations.
The scientist explained that, unlike other methods for determining subcutaneous blood microcirculation (for example, using a laser speckle blood flow imaging system), measuring heat flux density using a sensor is simple: you only need to measure its constant electromotive force.

According to the authors, the relative systematic error of the sensors does not exceed 5%. To increase the accuracy of measuring the density of heat fluxes on the surface of the human body, an analytical model was used to determine the systematic error of the transducer.

At this stage, the team of scientists is faced with the task of improving the sensors: reducing their size, increasing their speed. In the future, it is planned to develop a mobile device for measuring the heat flux density on the surface of the human body (similar to a Holter monitor for recording an ECG). Currently, a team of researchers has already developed its prototype.
It should be noted that the university is carrying out a large amount of research and development in the field of radio electronics. They are part of the university development program, which received support from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science within the framework of the federal project «Priority 2030» of the national project «Science and Universities».
