ROME, December 26 Italian surgeons for the first time in the world performed an operation to transplant nerve tissue from a leg to restore the mobility of a paralyzed arm, a scientific and medical center reported on Tuesday Turin.
The doctors’ patient was a 55-year-old medical worker who was involved in an accident about five months ago. He suffered the amputation of half of his left leg and seriously damaged the shoulder joint of his left arm.
““The complex surgical procedure lasted about 12 hours, during which different teams connected the severed nerves from the branch of the peroneal nerve with the aim of reinnervating (restoring function — ed.) the muscles of the upper limb,” says the report transmitted to.
Experts note the innovative nature of the operation, which was the fruit of four years of research work. Such a nerve transplantation, it is emphasized, occurred for the first time in the world.
