Extremely negative attitude towards the country on the part of international sports organizations is unlikely to allow the Russian figure skating team, after the disqualification of Kamila Valieva, to retain the gold medals in the team tournament of the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, said two-time Olympic medalist and coach Alexander Zhulin.
On Monday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. The period of disqualification starts from December 25, 2021. The International Skating Union (ISU) will decide on the approval of the results of the Olympic team figure skating tournament on February 7. Earlier, the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) emphasized that according to the rules, the results of team competitions at the 2022 Olympic Games do not depend on the outcome of the consideration of Valieva’s individual case and are not subject to legal review.
“”To be honest, according to the letter of the law, when one player on a team is caught using drugs or doping, the team, as a rule, is not deprived of medals. Only this athlete is deprived of the award. But knowing how “they love” us” our foreign spiteful critics, I won’t be surprised by anything. Therefore, there is hope, but it is small. I don’t know how they (the ISU and MOK) will treat us. But for some reason I think it’s bad,” said Zhulin, assessing the team’s chances Russia to retain the gold medals of the Games.
Valieva passed a positive doping test on December 25, 2021, on the day of the free program of the Russian Championship. This became known on February 8, 2022 – the day after the end of the team tournament at the Olympics in Beijing, where the Russian team with Valieva in its composition won. Due to the proceedings on this issue, the results of the team tournament of the Games were not confirmed.
