Ford presented the third-generation Transit Connect “heel”, made on the basis of the current VW Caddy as part of the Ford-Volkswagen alliance, at it will hit the market this summer.
The current fifth-generation VW Caddy debuted back in 2020, its passenger clone from Ford under the name Tourneo Connect was released in 2021, and only now the “blue oval” presented a purely commercial version of the same model called Transit Connect, which will finally replace the delayed on the second generation Transit Connect market.

The new Transit Connect, like its sister Caddy, will be available with two wheelbase options (2755 or 2970 mm), a maximum useful body capacity of 3.7 cubic meters, a maximum useful body length of 2150 mm, a maximum load capacity of 820 kg, a maximum towable weight trailer — 1.5 t.

A plastic partition is installed between the front (driver's) and rear (cargo) parts of the cabin of the new Transit Connect. In the Kombi version with the second row of seats, it is assigned to the C-pillars, but is not tightly screwed, but is made movable: the partition can be moved forward along with the second row seats, the backs and cushions of which, during the transformation, line up in one plane, and the headrests tilt forward, so as not to touch the roof. In this way, you can adjust the capacity of the Kombi version: with the wall moved forward and the second row seats folded, the useful volume of the body of the long-wheelbase van reaches 3.1 cubic meters, the short-wheelbase van reaches 2.5 cubic meters.

The interior of the new Ford “heel” is typically Volkswagen, with an inconvenient touch panel for adjusting the microclimate. All versions have a standard fully digital 10-inch instrument panel. The multimedia touch screen is also 10-inch. The back of the front passenger seat in the folded position can serve as an organizer table. The range of electronic driver assistants is, of course, very rich, including a special program that makes it easier to maneuver with a trailer. Three main lines of equipment/finishing are announced — the basic Trend, the advanced Limited and the crossover Active (has a protective plastic body kit and roof rails).

The new Transit Connect debuts a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which will later appear in the VW Caddy: it includes a 1.5-liter gasoline turbo engine, a 6-speed DSG transmission (“automatic” with two clutches), an electric motor and a high-voltage battery (its capacity has not yet been opened). The maximum total output of the power plant in hybrid mode is 150 hp. and 350 Nm. The maximum electric range is 110 km in the WLTP cycle. The maximum battery charging power is 50 kW.
An alternative to the hybrid powertrain is a 2.0-liter turbodiesel with 102 or 122 hp. The van with a 102-horsepower diesel engine is equipped with only a 6-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. The version with a 122-horsepower engine offers a choice of a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with an automatic power take-off clutch to the rear axle, but all-wheel drive can only be obtained in combination with a manual gearbox.

Prices for the Ford Transit Connect have not yet been announced; for reference, let’s say that the passenger Ford Tourneo Connect costs in Germany from 29,290 euros, the VW Caddy van — from 27,775 euros.
We add that Ford also has a new junior “heel” of its own design: it is called Transit Courier in the cargo version (costs from 22,075 euros) and Tourneo Courier in the passenger version (from 25,450 euros), the van can accommodate up to 2, 9 cubic meters of cargo, there is a version with an all-electric powertrain, it will go on sale later this year.
