The current award season was generally marked by an increase in the number of participants from the Middle Kingdom. Three Chinese models have made it to the finals: one will compete for the main award, another may be recognized as the most beautiful, and the third may become the best city car.
All participants in the annual World Car Of The Year (WCOTY; World Car of the Year) competition were announced in September 2023, and now the organizers have named ten finalists in the main category and five contenders for victory in related ones. Let us remind you that according to the rules, cars with a production volume of at least 10,000 units per year compete for the main award, in addition, models must be sold on at least two continents and at least two major markets (China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America or USA). Other categories have their own conditions. Be that as it may, the best cars are selected by a jury consisting of more than a hundred journalists from 29 countries (Russia is also on the list).
Last season of World Car Of The Year there were several representatives from China, but now there are even more of them. Moreover, the initial lists included both models known to Russians (for example, the Omoda S5 sedan or the Voyah Free crossover) and exotic ones, even for our market (Dayun ES3 or Dorcen E20). The main sensation is that one of the “Chinese” managed to make it to the finals of the main competition: the best car in the world in 2024 could be the BYD Seal electric sedan (Atto 4 in some markets). What’s doubly interesting is that this model also claims to be the best car in Europe. Meanwhile, in the World Car Of The Year competition, the Chinese can also take home awards in the City Car and Best Design categories.

The next stage is to reduce each of the current lists to three participants, the final three finalists will be revealed at the end of February at the Geneva Motor Show. The winners will be announced in March at an exhibition in New York.
Last year, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan won the competition: it was recognized not only as the World Auto 2023, but also as the best in the Electric Car of the Year and Design of the Year categories. The 2023 Premium Car was the Lucid Air, the Best Sports Car was the Kia EV6 GT, and the City Car of the Year award went to the Citroen C3 hatchback, designed for emerging markets.
