Kaliningrad Avtotor officially announced its own electric car brand Amberauto, rumors about which have been circulating on the Internet since last fall. A family of subcompact city electric vehicles of its own design will debut this year under the Amberauto brand. The word Amber comes from the English amber, which means amber, and amber, as you know, is one of the main symbols of the Kaliningrad region.
In December, a short, red electric car with a pop-eyed face, shown by the Moscow Polytechnic, became a global sensation, or rather a worldwide laughing stock: it was mentioned in conjunction with Avtotor, since the Moscow Polytechnic is one of the partners of the Kaliningrad enterprise, from which the vast majority of the world and Russian media concluded that that the Kaliningrad plant will soon begin to produce just such a machine.
The same undeservedly ridiculed universal aggregate carrier from the Moscow Polytechnic
In fact, the red car is just a universal aggregate carrier that does not need a design at all; it was made, as they say, from scrap materials and so that it would be as convenient as possible to test various components and assemblies on it, including for future Avtotor electric vehicles. It is impossible to equate an aggregate carrier with a production vehicle, because an aggregate carrier is not even an early prototype, but simply a running test bench. Moscow Polytechnic and Avtotor gave prompt clarifications on this matter, but for some reason many foreign and domestic colleagues ignored them and did not rebut their hasty conclusions.
The electric cars that Avtotor intends to produce under the Amberauto brand will be much sleeker and more compact than the clumsy unit carrier; they belong to the class of heavy L7 quadricycles, which, due to their modest technical characteristics, do not require modern expensive passive and active safety systems.
The development of Amberauto electric vehicles is being carried out within the Russian Federation, some components will be imported at first, but in the future the level of localization should exceed 90%, for which purpose “12 new factories are being created in the Kaliningrad region, which will produce not only the electric vehicles themselves, but also dozens of types of auto components, including critical ones, such as the electric motor, gearbox, traction battery, power electronics, as well as the electric vehicle chassis, body and body systems, steering, etc.”
Amberauto’s modular platform will allow the production of two- and four-seater city cars electric vehicles, as well as commercial versions based on them for delivery services. Sketches of Amberauto electric vehicles and even some technical details have already surfaced on the Internet, but we will not quote them here — it is better to wait for the official premiere, especially since the wait is not long.
Remember that Avtotor today also produces passenger cars and commercial vehicles cars of several Chinese brands, including Kaiyi, BAIC, SWM and Brok (renamed Foton), and recently it became known that two Dongfeng crossovers will also receive Kaliningrad registration.
