The British non-profit organization Green Alliance, which actively lobbies the “green” agenda in general and the electrification of road transport in particular, complained about the famous actor Rowan Atkinson to the House of Lords (the upper house of the UK Parliament): his column on electric cars in The Guardian newspaper is called sabotage, as it misleads people and encourages them to refuse to buy electric cars.
Rowan Atkinson's article in The Guardian was published last summer, Kolesa.ru provided its translation into Russian, so we won't retell the contents in detail here, but let's briefly say that the legendary «Mr. Bean» is skeptical about the aggressive imposition of electric vehicles and believes that Hydrogen and synthetic fuels can bring much more real benefits to transport ecology.
Atkinson has a degree in engineering and is a passionate car enthusiast, so his views on electric vehicles are especially interesting. The actor's article in The Guardian caused a great public outcry and criticism from supporters of the idea that man-made CO2 emissions and the greenhouse effect are the main evil on Earth that everyone has a responsibility to fight. The Guardian, seeing what a fuss there was, quickly published an article by the “right expert,” namely Simon Evans from the Internet resource Carbon Brief, funded by the European Climate Fund, he tore Atkinson’s theses to smithereens, but this turned out to be not enough.
Last week, a representative from the Green Alliance brought a report to the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee that listed the reasons for the slowdown in demand for electric vehicles in the UK. One of the reasons was cited as a “devastating” article by Rowan Atkinson in The Guardian, which undermines confidence in electric cars and interferes with the implementation of the government’s plan to “green” road transport. Fortunately, Atkinson's name was not included in the official report of the committee, which speaks of the prudence of the lords, but the fact of denunciation, as they say, is obvious. An actor who simply publicly expressed his opinion is, according to environmental activists, a pest.
Let us note on our own that the slowdown in demand for electric cars recorded last year is a global trend, to which Rowan Atkinson, of course, has nothing to do with it, it’s just that the world is not yet ready to completely switch to electric cars, and electric cars cannot yet completely replace cars with internal combustion engines. In the same UK, discussions began in government circles last year about the advisability of a complete ban on sales of new cars with internal combustion engines in 2035, but so far the planned plan is being implemented.
One of the stages of this plan was the introduction of sales quotas electric vehicles in the UK: in 2024, the share of zero-emission cars should be 22% of total new car sales, in 2025 this share will increase to 28%, in 2026 — to 33%, in 2027 — to 38% , in 2029 — up to 52%. Quotas do not yet apply to small companies selling less than 2,500 cars per year. Large companies that do not comply with quotas will pay large fines to the treasury — £15,000 for each «hydrocarbon» car sold in excess of the permitted limit. There are many nuances in how accounting will be kept — you can learn about them from the publication on the Autovista24 website.
