Leopold Gershkovich was born on March 17, 1935. While studying at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, he worked as a choirmaster and conductor at the Musical Drama Theater in Krasnoyarsk. After graduating from the conservatory in 1957, the musician became the chief conductor of the Moscow touring opera Rosconcert. In 1963, at the invitation of Natalia Sats, he came to the theater she had just created.
