MOSCOW, February 26 A court in Moscow sentenced two men who attacked Kommersant photojournalist Anatoly Zhdanov in 2020 to 2 and 2.5 years colony, said senior assistant to the head of the capital's main headquarters of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Yulia Ivanova.
Kommersant reported that on November 3, 2020, Zhdanov was beaten in Moscow by unknown persons “in the uniform of private security company employees” while trying to film the windows of exchange offices with exchange rates. The attackers demanded that the correspondent show photographs, he refused, and they began to beat him. The police opened a criminal case under Article 116 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Battery”.
“The evidence collected by the investigative department for the Western Administrative District of the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the city of Moscow was recognized by the court as sufficient to pass a verdict against Sergei Grebenyukov and Roman Moskovsky. They were found guilty of committing a crime under Part 3 of Article 144 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (obstruction of legal professional activities of journalists by forcing them to refuse to disseminate information, combined with violence against the journalist),” Ivanova said.
She added that during the investigation, forensic examinations, confrontations, and CCTV cameras were examined. The Dorogomilovsky District Court sentenced one defendant to 2 years in prison, and the second to 2.5. The accused will serve their sentence in a general regime correctional colony.
