MOSCOW, April 7 American entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk said that the colonization of Mars will require at least one million people and several million tons of cargo, which he believes will be delivered to the Red Planet possible within 20 years.
According to the entrepreneur, the Mars colonization project will be implemented on the Starship 3 rocket, which is currently the latest model in the line. In his speech, the billionaire noted that Starship 3, in addition to having better capacity characteristics, will cost the company significantly less to launch than previous models. It is noted that many ship components can be reused as raw materials on Mars. 
«To create a self-sufficient city (on Mars — ed.), I think you need about a million people and several million tons of cargo… And we can do it in 20 years,» Musk said during a speech at the SpaceX base. a post from which was published on the company’s page on social network X.
Musk noted that missions to Mars will be carried out approximately every two years. The entrepreneur also emphasized that most of the colonizers of Mars may not return back to Earth, but noted that the possibility of return must be ensured. 
«I think we'll give people the opportunity to go back because they're more likely to go (to Mars — ed.) if there's an opportunity to come back. Most people who go to Mars will probably never come back to Earth.» » he said, adding that he would like to make travel to Mars so cheap «that everyone can afford it.»
The entrepreneur also emphasized that the expedition to Mars will be preceded by the Moonbase Alpha lunar program, which involves the creation of a lunar base. At the same time, according to the entrepreneur, it requires “specialized ships” due to the lack of an atmosphere and a different type of surface.
