At the Beijing Motor Show, which opened today, April 25, the joint venture Changan Mazda presented two new products — the serial Mazda EZ-6 liftback and the Mazda Arata conceptual crossover. As you might guess, the models are aimed at the Chinese market: the first five-door will go on sale by the end of this year, and an SUV based on the show car will appear in 2025; both models will be produced locally. Let's start with the liftback.
It was officially announced that the Mazda EZ-6 was made together with Changan, but other details about the extent of the partnership were not provided. Apparently, the Deepal SL03 liftback was taken as the basis for the model. Let's remember that the Deepal brand (aka Shenlan or Deep Blue) was launched by Changan in 2022 specifically for electrified cars. Like the donor “Chinese”, the Mazda EZ-6 liftback will be available with a hybrid or all-electric setup. By the way, this car is considered the successor to the Mazda Atenza, which has long left the “heavenly” market: this is the name there of the model, which in other countries is known as the Mazda 6 (although Atenza was produced by another joint venture — with the FAW concern, this enterprise has already been disbanded).

The new Mazda has its own exterior design. Among the features are narrow diode running lights and compact blocks of main headlights located under them, frameless doors, a retractable spoiler and rear lights designed in the form of a single die. In addition, along the edges of the edging of the “radiator grille” (most likely this is an imitation) there are luminous sections.

The length of the Mazda EZ-6 is 4921 mm, width – 1890 mm, height – 1485 mm. The wheelbase size has not yet been revealed. The Deepal SL03 is shorter (4820 mm) and slightly lower (1480 mm), and has the same width as the Mazda. The wheelbase of the “Chinese” is 2900 mm. Well, for comparison, the dimensions of the current Mazda 6 sedan (in European specification): 4870/1840/1450 mm, the distance between the axles is 2830 mm.

The interior is designed in the same vein as the Deepal SL03. There are separate screens for the instrument panel and multimedia system, a two-spoke steering wheel and a two-story central tunnel. The model also comes with a set of electronic assistants.
They didn’t talk about the EZ-6 technology; Changan Mazda only said that the electric version will be able to travel approximately 600 km on the CLTC cycle, and the total range of the rechargeable PHEV hybrid will be more than 1000 km. The purely electric Deepal SL03 has a motor with a power of 218 or 258 hp installed on the rear axle; the electric car has a battery with a capacity of 58.89 kWh or 66.8 kWh (2024 model). The hybrid installation includes a 95-horsepower 1.5 naturally aspirated gasoline engine (intended only for recharging the battery), an electric motor with 218 or 238 hp. and a battery with a capacity of 18.99 or 28.39 kWh.

The Mazda Arata crossover is still just a show car, even the interior is not ready yet. It has large wheels and cameras instead of mirrors. The concept anticipates a commercial electrified SUV, which, according to Chinese media, will also be made together with Changan. It is possible that the Deepal S7 SUV will be used as a basis.

Meanwhile earlier Mazda has also registered the “6e” index, already in Europe. It is quite possible that the outdated Mazda 6 will also have a replacement there, but there is no information yet on whether the European model will have something in common with the Mazda EZ-6 liftback.
