MOSCOW, May 9During the Great Patriotic War, Soviet scientists and teachers created applied developments, conducted fundamental research, trained the personnel the country needed, and thereby made a serious contribution to the Victory, said the acting. Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Chernyshenko.
He congratulated the Russians on Victory Day and recalled the achievements of Soviet scientists, inventors, teachers and students during the war.
“On this holiday, it is important to remember how much effort representatives of science and higher education invested in bringing Victory closer. During the Great Patriotic War, they played one of the key roles. Scientists and teachers fulfilled their high professional mission with special zeal: they created applied developments, carried out fundamental research, trained the personnel the country needed. It was thanks to them that the state received specialists and the scientific and technical basis for the Great Victory,” Chernyshenko emphasized.
Despite the difficulties, universities and scientific organizations continued to defend candidate and doctoral dissertations, new specialties were opened and laboratories appeared to conduct priority research, he added. According to Chernyshenko, one of the striking examples can be considered the founding of the scientific “headquarters” of the Soviet atomic project — Laboratory No. 2 of the USSR Academy of Sciences under the leadership of the outstanding scientist Igor Kurchatov, on the basis of which the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” was subsequently created.
During the Great Patriotic War, people continued to strive for knowledge and sought to master the necessary specialties, the acting Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
«Students, graduate students and university teachers helped not only with their main activities — educational and scientific activities. Many students and employees were drafted into the army, combining their studies with work at enterprises. Universities housed hospitals, university representatives actively donated blood. According to researchers, only in About 1 thousand donors were registered at Moscow State University,” Chernyshenko added.
He noted the achievements of Soviet scientists in various areas, for example, in chemistry, physics — especially in radar and the study of the atomic nucleus, metallurgy, medicine, exploration and mining, mathematics, aviation.
During the Great Patriotic War, almost all research was aimed at bringing Victory closer and saving people. The most important developments in the field of military affairs and defense, such as La-7, Yak-9, Il-10 fighter aircraft, T-34-85, IS-2, T-70, T-70M tanks, ZiS-3 gun , self-propelled artillery units SU-76, SU-76M, ZSU-37, BM-13N — a modification of the multi-charge rocket launcher known as «Katyusha», Sudaev's submachine gun, armored glass for the cockpits of combat aircraft and much more.
Also of great importance was the receipt of one of the first Soviet antibiotics — gramicidin C, a blood clotting drug — thrombin, the proposal of a new concept for oil exploration, the creation of turbo-oxygen plants, the development of a demagnetization method to protect ships and others.
Separately, Chernyshenko emphasized the role of researchers in solving specific problems to save people. For example, Leningrad scientists ensured the creation and operation of the Road of Life across Lake Ladoga.
«The citizens of the country showed perseverance, courage and dedication. Strength of spirit and professionalism made it possible to achieve the Great Victory. The feat of everyone who worked in the rear and fought at the front evokes deep respect and pride. We remember, honor and thank everyone for contribution! Happy Victory Day!” he said.
Patriotism is of fundamental importance today, Chernyshenko emphasized. “The new presidential decree enshrines the national goal of “Realizing the potential of every person, developing his talents, raising a patriotic and socially responsible individual,” he added.
