MOSCOW, May 8.< /strong> Scientists have recorded a powerful flare on the Sun, said Sergei Bogachev, head of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
«A large ejection of mass towards the Earth was registered on the Sun on the morning of May 8. The plasma cloud was formed by a new flare of the highest magnitude (level X1), occurred at about eight in the morning Moscow time <…> The movement of the ejection towards the Earth is currently confirmed by observations of space coronagraphs. The preliminary arrival of solar masses to the Earth is expected on Saturday, May 11,” he said.
Solar flares, depending on the power of X-ray radiation, are divided into five classes: A, B, C, M and X.
According to the agency's interlocutor, this release will be the largest in the current surge in solar activity.
«The preliminary forecast for the power of magnetic storms for the weekend may be G2-G3. The information will be updated within 24 hours,» Bogachev added.
Solar flares can cause magnetic storms on Earth, which lead to disruptions in energy systems and affect the migration routes of birds and animals. In addition, strong storms cause disruptions in short-wave communications and the operation of navigation systems, as well as voltage drops in industrial networks.
As scientists have noted, the increasing frequency of flares and the growth of their power indicate the gradual approach of the Sun to the peak of activity, which, according to some according to forecasts, it may occur as early as mid-2024, and according to others, it will shift to 2025.
