Volkswagen will drop the GTX name, “hot” electric cars will get GTI and R prefixes

The company confirmed early plans according to which by 2030 the list of models with the letter R will only include electric vehicles.

The German Volkswagen brand has a separate “green” ID family, which includes several models. The first-born was the five-door ID.3 hatchback, later the ID.4 and ID.5 crossovers, the ID.Buzz minivan and van, as well as the ID.7 liftback and station wagon followed. The Chinese lineup also includes the ID.6 crossover. In the future, the line will be replenished with other new products, one of them will be a compact, created on the basis of the ID concept. 2all.

Initially, the manufacturer decided to give the “charged” electric cars their own addition to the name – GTX. The first to receive it were the ID.4 crossover and its coupe-like version, the ID.5. In mid-March of this year, the company also declassified the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX hot hatch and the ID.7 GTX Tourer five-door. In addition, at the same time, with the help of one teaser, the “charged” ID minivan was announced. Buzz GTX.

Initially, it was assumed that only versions with a dual-engine power plant would receive the GTX prefix, but later the manufacturer abandoned this rule, because it was received by the ID.3 hatchback, which, even in the “heated” version, is equipped with only one electric motor located on the rear axle (albeit more powerful compared to the “regular” version). Let us remind you that the hot hatch's output can be equal to 286 hp. (545 Nm of torque) or 326 hp. (545 Nm).

Despite the fact that the GTX line has only recently been significantly expanded, the manufacturer does not plan to use the combination of these three letters in the future for Volkswagen's hot electric vehicles. British Autocar reports this with reference to VW CEO Thomas Schaefer. He said that gradually this name will become a thing of the past, and the “charged” versions of “electric trains” will get the familiar additions – GTI and R.

Last September, the company revealed the Volkswagen ID.GTI concept, which foreshadows an all-green successor to the Golf GTI hot hatch. It is expected that such a new product will go on sale on the European market in early 2027. It was previously noted that other “charged” versions of ID-family models, which will have front-wheel drive, will also receive the addition of GTI to the name.

The head of Volkswagen has not yet said what the “hot” electric cars that received an increase in the form of the letter R will have in common, except for all-wheel drive. However, he confirmed that early plans to have an all-electric R range by 2030 are still in place. It is expected that the R-version of the ninth-generation “green” Golf will appear in 2029.

Recall that at the end of March this year, the Volkswagen Golf celebrated the 50th anniversary of its launch into production. At that time, the number of produced copies of one of the most popular cars in the world exceeded 37 million.
