Juraj Cintula, a 71-year-old poet from the western city of Levice, posted a rant online speech to Fico before opening fire on the left-wing nationalist at close range on Wednesday.
A photo of the writer posted on the website X (formerly Twitter) shows him protesting controversial government reforms, including the abolition of the special prosecutor's office in February.
The anti-corruption service was closed in March — despite warnings from the European Commission — by Mr Fico, who was forced to deny that he ran the mafia. state during the previous term of office.
He is seen as one of the EU's most pro-Russian leaders after campaigning to stop arms sales to Ukraine.
In a message to the Anti-Violence Movement 2022: Mr Chintula condemned Russian invasion of Ukraine. “What Slavic brotherhood?” he wrote, referring to the Kremlin's statements that Ukraine and Russia can be united because they are essentially the same country. “He is just an aggressor and an object of attack.”
A friend from Levice told Markiza TV that the couple had a debate about politics, saying: “I am more for Russia. He had a different opinion.”
