MOSCOW, June 27 A donor with a variant Rh factor of blood was identified at the Konchalovsky Hospital in Moscow, Deputy Mayor of the capital for social development Anastasia Rakova told reporters .
«»The capital's blood bank is able to meet the needs in a variety of cases… A previously unregistered phenotype of the Rh factor, which was identified in a Muscovite, may save lives in the future. After all, during transfusion, it is extremely important to take into account not only the blood type, but also the variant of the donor's Rh factor and the recipient,” said Rakova.
The press service added that the young man came to donate blood for the first time as part of a donor campaign. During the initial examination, it turned out that he had a second blood group and D-negative status, that is, the Rh factor. However, deeper testing showed that the D antigen was present in the donor, but the exact phenotype could not be determined. In such special cases, molecular genetic studies are required to establish Rh status.
«In the department of transfusiology of the city clinical hospital named after M.P. Konchalovsky, a register has been created in which more than 41 thousand donors with different phenotypes of erythrocyte antigens, including very rare ones, are registered. Today, more than 190 units of blood are stored in the cryobank with a rare phenotype… More than 7 tons of blood are collected here every year,” the press service noted.
