MOSCOW, July 8. Scientists from the Institute of Russian Language named after. A.S. Pushkin suggested using sketchnoting — a method of visual notes — to teach students of media specialties. They found that sketchnoting increases students’ motivation, activates their creativity, and facilitates the assimilation and memorization of information. The study was published in the collection of the International Scientific and Practical Conference «XXIV Cyril and Methodius Readings».
““Information visualization is one of the current areas of research in the field of journalism and mass communication. Scientists and teachers are studying ways to use infographics in the educational process in order to increase its effectiveness and student engagement,” said the author of the study, associate professor of the Department of Russian Literature and Intercultural Communication Institute of Russian Language named after. A.S. Pushkin Violetta Gaputina.
One of the ways to visualize information is sketchnoting, a special form of taking notes or notes with the simultaneous use of text and various kinds of drawings (pictograms, symbols, arrows, logos, diagrams, illustrations). The introduction of new technologies that meet modern trends and satisfy the interests of students is an important part of the educational process.
Scientists from the Pushkin Institute conducted a study of the use of sketchnoting in classes with master's students within the disciplines «Creating a multimedia product: format, structure, genres» and «Technologies for creating a media product in Internet communications.»
» Students readily accept educational and scientific material packaged in a “fashionable wrapper” and complete creative tasks with great enthusiasm and involvement,” said Gaputina.
According to her, sketchnoting increases the creative abilities of students, since creating a sketch requires a creative approach and turns boring and formal learning into exciting and useful, meeting the current format of «edutainment».
Previously, scientists had already considered the possibility of using sketchnoting as a new technology in the educational process, but employees of the Pushkin Institute were the first to propose creative options for using sketchnoting as an educational task in media disciplines.
The main purpose of the sketch is a visual representation of a linear text. Therefore, when studying the basics of Internet journalism, teachers invited students to make a visual summary of A. Akopov’s article “Web 2.0 as a premonition” using special Internet platforms, computer and mobile applications. According to researchers, this type of task significantly facilitated the process of assimilation and memorization of a voluminous and rather complex text.
A more original task, also using case technology, was: “Imagine that you are an event manager of a media holding, and you have been tasked with designing a poster for a related event (PR campaign, significant date, opening of new offices, etc. .). Using special applications, create it in the sketchnoting genre.» According to Violetta Gaputina, such an assignment immersed students in the real work process.
She noted that using sketchnoting increases motivates students, improves their ability to perceive and remember information, and also stimulates a creative approach to completing tasks. The proposed ideas can form the basis of exercises for creating other types of infographics. They will help develop professional visual design skills in the digital environment, develop innovative thinking and creative abilities, and increase interest in learning by introducing entertaining elements into the educational process.
Today, scientists are starting to develop other exercises and tasks with the design of different digital visualization formats information and creative spaces (timeline, mindmap, scribing, word cloud) for teaching students of media specialties.
