MOSCOW, July 15 Former commander of the 58th Army, General Ivan Popov, thanked journalists after being transferred to house arrest for support, reports a correspondent from the hall of the 235th garrison military court.
“Thank you everyone for your support, you were the wind in my sails,” the general told reporters after the court decision was announced.
On Monday, the 235th Garrison Military Court changed Popov’s preventive measure, releasing him from the pre-trial detention center to house arrest. The court released him from custody in the courtroom, and his handcuffs were removed.
Four men wearing identical T-shirts with the inscription “Spartak, I have the honor” came to court to support the general, since Popov has the call sign “Spartak.” However, they were not allowed into the courthouse and were asked to leave the territory due to a ban on campaigning.
Popov is accused of fraud on an especially large scale, committed by a group of persons using their official position (Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
According to the investigation, the general was involved in the theft in 2023 of more than 1,700 tons of rolled metal products purchased by the military-civil administration of the Zaporozhye region in order to provide humanitarian aid. These materials, worth over 100 million rubles, were intended for the equipment of engineering defensive structures on the line of combat contact. At the same time, the Investigative Committee believes that Popov received just over a million rubles for his “services.”
