MOSCOW, July 12. Owls are ahead of early risers in terms of cognitive abilities, according to Imperial College London.
Experts analyzed the performance of more than 26 thousand people to find out how various aspects of sleep, including its duration, pattern and quality, affect abilities .
«A person's chronotype—a preference for evening or morning activity, commonly referred to as night owls and early risers—has also been found to influence performance on cognitive tests,» the article states.
So, “night owls” showed the best results on the tests, and “larks” received the lowest scores compared to the other two groups: those who do not have a specific preference between morning and evening, as well as those who are active in the afternoon.
The study also showed that for brain function, it is optimal to sleep for seven to nine hours a day — this regime improves memory and thinking abilities. Longer or shorter sleep, according to scientists, on the contrary, worsens performance.
