MOSCOW, July 17 The Basmanny Court of Moscow detained retired Colonel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Vladimir Novgorodov on charges of murder and illegal arms trafficking, according to the portal of courts of general jurisdiction Moscow.
““The petition to select a preventive measure in the form of detention of V.V. Novgorodov was granted,” the electronic database says.
According to the court file, the man is charged with Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder of two or more persons, committed in a generally dangerous manner by a group of persons for mercenary motives or for hire, and also associated with robbery, extortion or banditry), Part 3 of Article 222.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal acquisition, transfer, sale and storage of explosives or explosive devices by a group of persons by prior conspiracy), Part 3 of Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal acquisition, transfer, storage and transfer of firearms by a group of persons by prior conspiracy).
According to MK, Novgorodov is suspected of involvement in a series of murders of entrepreneurs committed in 2000-2005. The gang of killers, who, according to investigators, were responsible for dozens of murders, included special forces soldiers and police officers, the publication writes.
The investigation suggested that Novgorodov kept a large amount of weapons and ammunition at his home that belonged to gang members. The arsenal was given to him by the leader of the killer group, Alexey Chebotarev, who was arrested last year.
Novgorodov retired from the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2011, until 2021 he worked in the security service of a commercial company, MK clarifies.
