MOSCOW, July 12 The temperature in June of this year broke a record: the month became the hottest in the history of meteorological observations for the Northern Hemisphere, and for the Earth as a whole, a scientist said Head of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia Roman Vilfand.
Earlier, the forecaster reported that the natural phenomenon El Niño is ending and moving into a neutral phase, but its consequences will continue to affect global temperatures.
«June became the hottest in general and in the Northern Hemisphere, despite the fact that El Niño has ended,» Vilfand said.
The El Niño phenomenon causes an abnormal increase in surface temperature in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The peculiarity of the change in phases of ocean currents is that during La Niña, heat from the atmosphere intensively goes into the ocean, and during El Niño, the flow goes from the ocean to the atmosphere.
