MOSCOW, July 16Researchers have discovered evidence of the existence of a cave on the Moon, accessible from the surface, which could protect people from the harsh conditions of the Moon and become a base for human habitation, should from the results of a study published in the scientific journal Nature.

“Several potential underground holes have been discovered on the surface of the Moon. These lunar pits are interesting from the point of view of <…> potential habitat in the future. <…> The hole in the Mare Tranquility is believed to be a promising site for a lunar base as it offers shelter from harsh surface conditions and could support long-term human exploration of the Moon,” the study said.
Its authors were a group of scientists from the USA and Italy. According to the study, analysis of data collected by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) revealed that the Mara Tranquility, which is the deepest known depression on the Moon, leads to a cave about 45 meters wide and about 77 meters long. The cave is located approximately 150 meters below the surface.
According to the study, further direct exploration of the cave could confirm the presence of an underground stable, radiation-protected environment with optimal temperature conditions for future human use. In addition, more than 200 pits have already been discovered at different latitudes of the Moon, but it remains unclear whether any of them can lead to similar caves.
