The killer visited Thailand about five times
The high-profile story of the discovery of the bodies of six people in the capital's five-star hotel in Thailand continues to acquire new details. A group of Vietnamese citizens, two of whom were dual Vietnamese-American citizens, died after drinking cyanide-laced drinks. Now, it seems, it has become clear who was involved in the terrible massacre.
The last moments of the lives of six people found dead in a luxury hotel in Bangkok, whose deaths were the result of murder, were captured on chilling CCTV footage.
56-year-old dual Vietnamese-American citizen Sherin Chong allegedly took the lives of five people and herself after running up huge debts related to her hospital investment in Japan.
According to reports, she convinced the couple and two other victims to invest in the project, but as a result they reportedly lost about 10 million baht — approximately 280 thousand US dollars (about 24 and a half million rubles).
< p>The dead — three men and three women of Vietnamese descent aged between 37 and 56 — were last seen alive when food was delivered to their room at the Grand Hyatt Erawan on Monday afternoon.
The group had arrived at the hotel the day before, but on Monday they all moved into room 502, which belonged to Sherin Chong.
Footage obtained by Vietnamese media captured the moment when the five victims headed to the room, which, will unfortunately become the scene of their deaths.
The alleged killer Chong, who was described by hotel staff as «under stress.» She was seen on CCTV footage wearing a colorful, patterned dress in a hotel elevator hours before meeting the rest of the group.
Hotel staff delivered food ordered by one of the group members at 2pm on Monday afternoon, along with pots of tea. The staff offered to brew and serve drinks, but Chong allegedly refused, telling them that she would take care of it herself.
The very next day at 5 p.m., the group was found lifeless in the same room. An autopsy showed that traces of cyanide were found in the cups and bodies of the victims, including the organizer of the massacre herself.
Police Major General Thiradeth Thumsuthi, head of the Metropolitan Police Department's investigation department, said police had interviewed the daughter of one of the victims and other witnesses.
He concluded: “The case is most likely related to a debt issue. There are no other options. The culprit was among six people because they were all the only ones who entered the room.»
The head of the Department of Forensic Medicine at Chulalongkorn University, Dr. Kornkiat Wongpaisarnsin, noted: “The victims’ lips and nails turned dark purple, indicating a lack of oxygen, and their internal organs turned blood red, another characteristic sign of cyanide poisoning.”< /p>
Investigators believe that the cyanide was most likely contained in silver flasks that were used to add to tea.
The conclusion that Sherin Chong was the killer was based on numerous evidence recorded (by cameras or memories of hotel employees).
Staff saw one woman receive food the day before, and CCTV footage showed the others arriving one after another shortly after. There were no other visitors, no one came out and the door was locked.
Titi added that the deaths appeared to have occurred about 24 hours before police arrived at the scene on Tuesday evening following a call hotel staff.
Thai Prime Minister Sretta Thaweesin immediately ordered an investigation into the deaths and even personally visited the hotel to discuss the case with investigators.
He added that some of the six foreigners appeared to be in the country for the first time, while others , apparently, have already been there before.
It is reported, for example, that Sherin Chong herself visited Thailand about five times on an American visa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam confirmed that four died were citizens of Vietnam, and the country's embassy in Thailand is working closely with the authorities.
“We hope that the families of the victims will soon cope with this heavy loss,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Pham Tu Hang.
< p>Meanwhile, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said officials were aware of reports of the death of two US citizens in Bangkok.
Thai police said the US Federal Bureau of Investigation was involved in the investigation.
< p>Prime Minister Sretta Taweesin said the Vietnamese and US embassies had been informed of the deaths, and the US FBI was involved in the investigation.
