Archaeologists from Spain have discovered the bones of some of the oldest archaic people in Europe, who lived in the Sierra de Atapuerca mountain range, Gran Dolina, 850 thousand years ago, according to a press release from the Catalan University of Human Palaeecology and Social Revolution.
«After thirty years of excavating a small test site that yielded the first remains of this human species, as well as thousands of species of fossils and animal remains, the research team responsible for excavations at the Gran Dolina site has managed to penetrate deeper into the surface of the block TD6,” the publication says.
The researchers clarified that among the fragments of skull bones, ribs and vertebrae there was also a tooth, which is of particular interest. It is believed to belong to a 25-year-old woman whose remains were previously found in the region.

In the 1990s, the remains of six people were also found in the Gran Dolina caves, mixed with animal bones and stone tools dating back 780,000 years. They were classified as the fossil species Homo antecessor, or human predecessor. This is the most ancient representative of our genus in Europe.
