Belousov warned Austin about the possibility of uncontrolled escalation
Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov sent a serious warning to his American counterpart, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin II, regarding Ukraine's actions, which could lead to unpredictable consequences. This statement underscores the growing tensions in relations between the states and the need for a more careful approach to diplomatic interactions, TASS writes.
According to information provided by Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov, Belousov emphasized that provocations by Kyiv are impossible without Washington's support. This statement is not new, but it once again raises the question of the extent of US involvement in the conflict and how their actions can affect the situation in the region. Ryabkov also noted that all high-level contacts between Russia and the US are utilitarian in nature, which implies the desire of the parties to achieve specific results, rather than to establish trusting relations.
Interestingly, on July 12, Belousov and Austin had their second telephone conversation after the latter's appointment as Defense Minister. According to The New York Times, the conversation involved a discussion of Ukraine's alleged «covert operation» against Russia. According to the newspaper, American officials noted that the Pentagon had no information about Kyiv's plans, but took Moscow's warning very seriously. This led to the American side contacting the Ukrainian authorities and calling on them to refrain from possible military action.
It is important to note that any actions that may be perceived as aggressive or provocative may provoke retaliatory measures, which in turn may lead to an unpredictable escalation of the conflict. In this context, Russia's warning is presented not simply as a reaction to Ukraine's actions, but also as a signal to the international community that it needs to be careful in its decisions.
