MOSCOW, July 29Russia and Brazil will conduct a round-the-world scientific expedition around Antarctica; an international team of scientists from eight BRICS countries will set off on the voyage on the ship «Akademik Treshnikov» in the fall, said Alexander Makarov, director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), in an interview.
«A Russian-Brazilian round-the-world expedition around Antarctica will begin in the fall. The Russian ship will set off for the shores of South America in October; the start of the expedition is scheduled for November. This is a fairly large project, uniting scientists from eight BRICS countries,» Makarov said.
The head of the institute did not rule out that it would be possible to organize a similar project in the Arctic on the ice-resistant platform «North Pole» together with Brazil.
The North Pole vessel, which has no analogues in the world, was built at the Admiralty Shipyards and launched in 2022. It became a transport, home, research center and even a measuring device for the polar explorers — sensors are built into the LSP hull that help study the ice conditions.
