August 6 was an unusually «hot» day there
A new temperature record was recorded by specialists at the Vostok station in Antarctica. On August 6, 2024, the thermometer showed -34.2 degrees Celsius, which is almost 50 degrees higher than last year's value on this day.
Recall that it is winter in Antarctica now. July and August are the coldest months of the year in Central Antarctica. The average long-term temperature in the East in July is -66.6 degrees, in August -67.6.
On Tuesday, scientists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute recorded the highest winter temperature in the history of regular observations at the coldest point on Earth – -34.2 degrees. This is 2.2 degrees warmer than what was recorded on August 9, 2013. Then the thermometer showed -36.4 degrees.
Experts recall that it was at the Vostok station on July 21, 1983, that the absolute minimum temperature on the planet was recorded – a record -89.2 degrees Celsius. A year ago, on August 6, 2023, the station was -82.3.
According to the director of the AARI Alexander Makarov, Russian polar explorers have been working at the Vostok station year-round for almost seven decades. They record the most extreme climatic conditions. Despite such facts as the temperature increase on August 6 this year, Antarctica will remain the continent of the lowest temperatures and will be under a thick ice sheet for hundreds of years to come.
In particular, the very next day after the record, on August 7, at Vostok station it got colder to -48.8 degrees.
