Avito Auto experts conducted a survey involving 10,000 people to study the preferences of buyers choosing used cars. It turned out that for 65% of respondents, when buying a vehicle from a dealer, the determining factor is confidence in its good condition, including compliance with the declared characteristics and operating history, pre-sale preparation, etc.
In second place in importance is confidence in the legal purity of the transaction and the presence of a guarantee from the seller; this is important for 55% of respondents who purchase a used car from a dealer. The third most popular factor was the cost of the car and the availability of favorable conditions, which were highlighted by 51% of survey participants. The list also included the professionalism of the seller, the ability to trade-in the car and apply for a loan.
Factors that matter most when buying a used car from a dealer. Avito Auto survey, July 2024
FactorShare of respondentsConfidence in the good condition of the car: compliance with the declared characteristics and history of operation, pre-sale preparation, etc. 65% Confidence in the legal purity of the transaction and the presence of guarantees from the seller 55% Cost of the car, the presence of favorable conditions for purchase 51% Professionalism of the seller, the opportunity to get advice or a real assessment of the car 29% The ability to hand over the previous car for trade-in 20% The ability to get a loan 18%
14% of respondents are ready to buy a used car from a dealer without any additional conditions. But 60% expect quality and guarantees from the dealer: it must be a trusted seller, the car itself must have a known history of operation, and the transaction must be legally clean.
It should be noted that used cars are popular among Russians: a total of 63% of respondents are ready to consider purchasing them. 26% of survey participants are ready to buy a car with a mileage of only up to 50 thousand km, another 28% — up to 100 thousand km. But for 29% of respondents, the car's mileage does not matter when buying.
Historically, dealers relied on new cars, but over time, the supply of used cars in dealerships has increased significantly due to increased demand for them. The fact that many buyers value warranties and reliability of transactions with dealers indicates great prospects for this sales channel, especially since buying such a car usually takes less time and simplifies the procedure for processing the sale, which is beneficial for the buyer. Avito Auto, as an active market player, strives to ensure maximum transparency and security of this process for all participants: it verifies users through State Services and banking services, creates a safe environment for communication on the platform and, in addition, provides the opportunity to verify the cleanliness of the car's history using Autoteka.
