MOSCOW, August 11 World Athletics President Sebastian Coe of Great Britain has confirmed his intention to run for the post of head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after Thomas Bach leaves, the Daily Mail reports.
The 142nd IOC session was held in Paris on Saturday, where 70-year-old Bach announced that he would not seek re-election for a new presidential term. He has headed the IOC since 2013.
«I've always made it clear that if the opportunity arose, I would seriously consider it. The opportunity has come up and I obviously need to think about it. Of course I'm going to consider it. I've been involved in the Olympic Movement for most of my life. That, and other personal aspects, will be helpful to this role,» Coe said.
Coe took over as head of World Athletics in 2015. In November of that year, the organization suspended the All-Russia Athletics Federation (ARAF) amid a doping scandal. World Athletics has repeatedly extended the ARAF's suspension. In August 2023, Coe was re-elected as president of the organization for a second time in an unopposed election. His term in office is four years and will be his last.
