MOSCOW, August 14 A new powerful flare has occurred on the Sun — on the side facing the Earth, said Sergei Bogachev, head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
«
“There is a new level X flare on the Sun — exactly on the Sun-Earth line. According to space tracking data, a new explosion of the highest magnitude was registered on the Sun at approximately 09:40 am Moscow time, according to preliminary estimates — level X1.1,” he said.
The expert explained that the explosion occurred in the northern hemisphere of the Sun — this is quite unusual for the current solar cycle, in which almost all activity is concentrated south of the equator.
«The center of the explosion, area number 3784, is currently located exactly on the Sun-Earth line (deviation of only two degrees), that is, in fact, in the center of the visible solar disk, from where the impact on the Earth in the case of mass ejections is inevitable and occurs with maximum efficiency,» Bogachev added.
However, according to him, the fact of mass ejection has not yet been confirmed. In a short period of time, solar matter does not have time to move away from the star so much that it can be noticed in interplanetary space. Information will be received within one or two hours, the agency's interlocutor specified.
Currently, the geomagnetic situation on Earth is assessed as moderately stable, Bogachev said. According to him, the magnetosphere has almost completely recovered after a major storm on August 12, but is still experiencing increased pressure from the disturbed solar wind.
“Episode disturbances are being recorded. Risks to the Earth from solar activity will remain for at least two to three days. After this period, the active solar centers currently influencing the Earth will move to areas less dangerous to the Earth,” the scientist concluded.
The strength of magnetic storms is assessed on a five-point scale. Storms of level G1 are considered the weakest, they have almost no effect on the operation of electrical appliances. Level G3 is a strong storm, directly affects power systems and causes interruptions in satellite navigation and radio communications. The maximum level is G5, large-scale problems with the power grid and serious malfunctions in the operation of satellites and radio communications are possible.
