Smartphones can be used for diagnostics
It seems that diagnostics of various diseases will soon become a little easier. Iraqi and Australian scientists have developed an algorithm that can instantly diagnose you just by the color of your tongue. All you need to do is take a picture of it.
The developed program can diagnose a wide range of ailments: diabetes, stroke, liver disease and much more, including a number of vascular and gastrointestinal diseases.
Research engineers from the Middle University of Technology and the University of South Australia, the Daily Mail reports, used 5,260 images to train machine learning algorithms to detect tongue colour in a series of experiments.
The researchers predict that smartphones will one day be used to diagnose diseases.
A new paper published in the journal Technologies describes how the proposed system analyzes tongue color to quickly diagnose disease. In the study, two teaching hospitals in the Middle East provided 60 images of the tongues of patients with various diseases.
A camera placed 20 centimeters away from the patient recorded the color of their tongue, and the imaging system predicted their health in real time.
The AI model was able to match the color of the tongue with the actual disease in almost all cases.
In general, many modern doctors resort to diagnosing a patient's condition by the color of their tongue. The color, shape, and thickness of the tongue can say much more about the patient's subjective complaints.
Usually, people with diabetes have a yellow tongue, cancer patients have a purple tint with a thick, greasy coating, and patients with acute stroke have a red tongue of an unusual shape.
At the same time, a white tongue can indicate anemia, and an indigo tongue, as experts characterize it, indicates vascular and gastrointestinal problems or asthma.
