MOSCOW, August 17 Free VPN service apps can't handle the user load, RBC writes.
The publication's journalists analyzed reviews from users of various VPN service applications and responses from their developers and indicated that problems with their work are associated with overloading their servers. They suggest that this is due to the slowdown of YouTube, since it was for the sake of watching videos on it that many began to use VPN services.
Some developers suggest users switch to paid subscriptions in order to thus provide resources for the operation of services and improve their quality, they noted in the article.
On July 4, Apple blocked 25 VPN service applications posted in the Russian App Store at the request of Roskomnadzor. Since March 1, the agency has been blocking information that popularizes or advertises means of bypassing blockages, such as VPN services or proxy servers.
Rostelecom reported technical problems with Google-owned equipment, which could affect the download speed and playback quality of YouTube videos for subscribers of all Russian operators. In turn, the president's press secretary Dmitry Peskov reported that the authorities have no plans to restrict access to the platform in Russia.
Later, the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Alexander Khinshtein, said that YouTube download speed on computers could drop by 70%. He noted that this measure will not affect mobile communications for now.
As Google reported, the company has been notified that some Russians cannot access YouTube, but the problem is not on the video hosting site's side and is not the result of a technical failure.
