Jose Mourinho is toxic and his abuse of Anthony Taylor has serious consequences. The scenes from the Budapest airport after Mourinho scolds Taylor were unacceptable. Mourinho is a bully on the playground and the only way to stop him, and it's happening again, is to impose harsh sanctions.
The scenes at the airport were horrific and echoed around the world, and they are a direct consequence of the actions of Mourinho, who made it possible for these people to act in this way. UEFA simply needs to act and they need to put in place better procedures to ensure the safety of officials. Players fly on charter flights after the games, but officials will fly on regular scheduled flights — additional security for the referees is crucial here.
I was surprised by the lack of security at Taylor's underground car park, which is located at UEFA. There would be a match delegate and an observer, but this is not enough. What we saw was unprecedented, poignant and deeply disturbing.
Both Roma and Sevilla were guilty of indiscipline and foul play on Wednesday night. For what happened after Mourinho and for the unacceptable insults he addressed to Taylor, I would ban Roma from European competition for one to two seasons. Mourinho should also receive a 10-match ban.
People will say it's too much, but he deserves it and you need a stronger deterrent because managers like Mourinho and others think they can get away with anything. It should be a complete stadium ban, not a touchline ban. The touchline ban in Europe will still allow a coach to sit in the directors' box with a match official. Mourinho must be expelled completely.
A referee abuse summit convened a group lobby to revoke managers' licenses following Anthony Taylor's insults. It cascades down from the very top. Anders Frisk was an elite-level referee, as was Taylor, who stepped down after receiving death threats while in charge of Mourinho's Chelsea game. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated behavior towards officials.
José Mourinho is accused of using offensive language against referee Anthony Taylor. prison system — and I think he had a great game on Wednesday. Indeed, many of the decisions he made were in Mourinho's favour. We won't get to the point where referees refuse to take responsibility for Mourinho's games, but they — and everyone in the game — should be less tolerant of his behavior.
