Tomorrow's French chic: DS reveals saloon-manifesto for future models

Premium marque DS has shown what the interiors of its cars will look like in the near future. Concept Manifesto DS M.i. 21 surprises with non-standard solutions and, of course, uses the potential of French haute couture.

The brands belonging to the Stellantis corporation have recently been competing with each other in the originality of the interior solutions of future models — this is very cool and interestingly, this means that different novelties will not be just slightly turned copies of each other, each brand has its own story and its own idea of style, even DS, the youngest brand in the Stellantis collection.

DS, we recall, broke away from the parent brand Citroen in 2014 to become an independent brand, today DS is included in the premium pool along with Alfa Romeo and Lancia (the Maserati brand owned by Stellantis is, by the way, already a luxury segment, not a premium one) . So far, DS hasn't had much success in the market and remains a niche French brand that not everyone even knows exists. In the future, DS, as well as other Stellantis brands, should strengthen its self-identification and become more attractive. What it will look like is shown in the DS M.i. Interior Concept Manifesto. 21.

Unlike mere concepts, which do not always precede serial novelties and may just be the imagination of designers, the manifesto has a clear connection with the coming reality — it is a kind of working tool (in this case, a landing layout) on which the interior architecture of future models is being worked out. The press release said that the proposed M.i. 21 solutions we will see in production electric vehicles DS in the next five years.

D.S. M.i. 21 builds on some of the ideas first seen on the 2020 DS Aero Sport Lounge concept. In particular, DS does not want to overload the interiors of its cars with screens, since when they are turned off they are large black spots that greatly reduce the aesthetic appeal and feeling of comfort of the cabin. The slim panoramic front panel in the DS M.i. 21 is divided into three sections: the traditional screens are small side sections, and the large central part is a kind of chest of drawers with storage boxes and a stylish textured finish on which the image is projected. When the projector is not working, the panel does not seem like a black spot and is perceived simply as furniture in a cozy living room. Another small instrument screen is built into the steering wheel hub.

In D.S. M.i. 21 there is no central tunnel — this is done to enhance the feeling of spaciousness. For the same purpose, the growth-manipulator on the central armrest is made transparent. The huge circles in the door cards are not the speakers of the audio system, as it might seem at first glance, but simply decorative panels that can be replaced — various design options for them were developed in collaboration with the best French fashion houses. The contour of the door circles can be seen even from the outside thanks to the LED lighting.

The lighting in the cabin is very intricate, adaptive, creating an intimate atmosphere, like in a theater box. The pleated seating is also reminiscent of the theatre. Folds are not only a design element, but also a reserve for a more distant future, when fully autonomous driving will be available to owners of DS electric cars and seats can be extended and turned into loungers and beds, which will require literally stretching the upholstery. Audio system in DS M.i. 21 is reduced to a suspended speaker under the front panel, the speaker body is made transparent so that you can see its elegant technical stuffing. » />

DS M.i. Concept Manifesto 21 is exhibited at the International Biennale of Crafts and Design that opens today in Paris. Structural and finishing materials are as environmentally friendly as possible, they widely use recycled materials and resins of natural origin — something similar we have already seen in the interior concept of the future from the British design studio Callum.
