The billionaire programmer-turned-chimney-sweep has filed an unlikely bid for the White House, saying that in his state, «waking up» is «what you did at 5 a.m. to start the day.»

Doug Burgum, Republican Governor of North Dakota. , became the last candidate to run in the 2024 presidential race, with a sarcastic remark directed at rivals.
The 66-year-old staked out his position as a candidate for «provincial America» and its values.
He told how he once worked as a chimney sweep and cleaned grain silos before «literally partaking the farm» by selling his family's land to start a software business.
It grew into a billion dollar company dollars based in North Dakota, which he sold to Microsoft.
Starting his campaign in Fargo, near his small hometown of Arthur, Mr. Burgum said the next US president should be «a man who has there is a job where you shower at the end of the day instead of at the beginning.”
He added: “No wonder small-town values have guided me all my life. life. Small town values are at the core of America. And frankly, now big cities could use more ideas and more values from small cities.”

In his speech and campaign video, Mr. Burgum urged people to listen to each other «with respect» and not «with anger, shouting, strife.»
He said, “I grew up in a small town in North Dakota. “Waking up” is what you did at 5 am to start your day.”
However, Mr Burgum said the economy, not culture wars or any other issues, should be the absolute priority.
Unlike many Republican governors, he called on his state to become carbon neutral by the end of the decade. His strategy is to improve carbon capture technology, not any restrictions on fossil fuel use.

Mr. Burgum was elected governor in 2016 and re-elected by a landslide in 2020.
He has yet to become widely known outside of North Dakota and will face major challenges in an area dominated by Donald Trump.
Ron DeSantis, runner-up governor Florida, is known to Americans much better than Mr. Burgum. .
However, his status as a rural state governor with an understanding of energy policy is expected to benefit him in Iowa, the first state to vote for the Republican nomination.
