Legendary commentator Martin Tyler is stepping down from Sky Sports as the voice of the Premier League ahead of the new season after 33 years with the broadcaster.

Tyler, 77, has become one one of the most recognizable commentators in English football history – and also around the world, where he covered the Champions League, World Cup finals and European Championships for broadcasters in the US and Australia.

He is not retiring but is retiring on good terms ahead of the 2023-2024 season, where he was the broadcaster's commentator for the biggest games since the Premier League's launch in 1992. Tyler's contract as a commentator will not be renewed. < /p>

He is best known to the current generation of supporters for his commentary on the dramatic end of the 2011-2012 season, when Sergio Aguero scored in stoppage time to give Manchester City their first title in the Premier League era. In the simple rising pronunciation of the Argentine's name, when the ball hit the net, he captured the wonder and emotion of the moment.

In a statement to Telegraph Sport, Tyler said: “In my humble opinion, the huge Sky Corporation today came into existence because of Sky Sports' groundbreaking and inspiring Premier League coverage. It has been a privilege for me to play a small part in the broadcasting history of the world's greatest league. Along the way, I have worked alongside legions of amazing professionals in every aspect of the television industry. I thank them all for their support and experience. It was an honor to be a member of a very gifted team.”

The Agüero moment was the most famous example of his signature goal commentary — he used the player's name to convey the excitement of the moment before pausing to let the noise of the crowd drown it out. His follow-up line at Etihad in 2012 demonstrated his ability with the words: “I swear you will never see anything like this again! So watch — drink…”

In an exclusive interview with Martin Tyler, Sergio Aguero looks back on his QPR game-winning goal, a decade at Manchester City, and how he sees his future.

Moments before David Beckham equalized with a free-kick against Greece at Old Trafford in October 2001 to secure England a spot in the World Cup final the following year, Tyler's words were prophetic. «With players like David Beckham,» he said, «you really feel like there are certain moments of destiny.»

Tyler has also established himself well among younger fans as the voice of the EA Sports Fifa video game, in which he comments about the efforts of young and old gamers were typical of the game from 2005 to 2020.

Gary Hughes, director of football at Sky Sports, said: “Everyone at Sky Sports would like to express their sincere gratitude to Martin for his unparalleled contributions and dedication to our coverage over the past 30 years. The Voice will always be synonymous with the Premier League and Sky Sports. When you think of comments, you think of Martin Tyler. “Collimor is approaching” [from the victory of “Liverpool” over “Newcaled” with a score of 4: 3 in 1996] and “Agerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” Premier League stories. We thank him and wish him all the best for the future.”

Tyler, who grew up in Surrey and attended the Royal Guildford Grammar School and then the University of East Anglia, began his career in journalism as a ghostwriter for Jimmy Hill's The Times column. With Hill's encouragement, he moved to London Weekend Television in the late 1960s and then to another ITV region, South Television. His first comment was made in December 1974 at Dell's home match for Southampton against Sheffield Wednesday.

His career skyrocketed after that and ITV Sport chose him to work in the Championship final peace in 1978. In the 1980s, he was number two on ITV behind the great Brian Moore. In 1990 he moved to Sky Sports — then to British Sky Broadcasting to become lead commentator.
