The «standard» new MPV is offered with a 2.5 four-cylinder aspirated, while the more aggressive version is now equipped with a turbo engine. In addition, both modifications are available with a hybrid installation.
Last spring, the Lexus LM minivan of the second generation debuted. Now it's the turn of his non-premium, but no less prestigious brothers: the new Toyota Alphard and Vellfire are presented in Japan. For Alphard, this is already the fourth generation, for its «sported» version — the third. Recall that the predecessors stayed on the market for almost eight years: sales of the old vans started in 2015, they survived restyling in 2017.

Like the «second» Lexus LM, the new Alphard and Vellfire are built on the upgraded GA-K platform, created as part of Toyota's TNGA architecture. Compared to previous minivans, body rigidity has increased by 50%, vibration levels have also been significantly reduced and sound insulation has been improved. All suspensions are independent: front — McPherson, rear — double wishbones. Also already «in the base» there are amplitude-dependent shock absorbers. Toyota Vellfire now also has a reinforced body (a strut appeared in the front part) and a reconfigured chassis (the settings were made more driver-friendly).

The length of the machines is now identical — 4995 mm (the increase in Alphard compared to the previous MPV was 50 mm, the length of Vellfire increased by 60 mm). The remaining dimensions were the same before, and they have not changed: the width is 1850 mm, the height is 1935 or 1945 mm (depending on the version), the wheelbase is 3000 mm.

Both vans still have an impressive grille: Toyota Alphard chips — plates and hidden running lights (pretending to be those same plates), Vellfire — massive horizontal dies and individual DRL strips. The “sported” minivan also got a more aggressive front bumper, plus the rear lights of this version have an original pattern (in addition, they are united by a red stripe, while the Alphard has a chrome insert on the stern). Alphard and Vellfire also received additional retractable footpegs. There are no more branded pronounced «fins» on the sides, although the window sill line still has an unusual break.

Vans are offered with a seven-seater saloon. Toyota claims that the developers managed to increase the space both between the first and second row of seats (+5 mm), and between the second and third (+10 mm). The seats located in the middle have new mounts that have vibration-damping rubber spacers. The “simple” versions of the second-row seat have heating, ventilation and footrests. The seats of the top vans, in addition, have touch-sensitive “remotes” for controlling the settings.

Both minivans also get a new multimedia system with a large screen that rises above the front panel, and there is also a virtual tidy in the list of equipment. There are now two separate glass sections in the roof — they are located on the sides of a long ceiling console (it is called the Super-Long Overhead Console), on which air ducts, lamps, a climate control unit and power window buttons were taken out. Of course, Alphard/Vellfire's arsenal includes a set of Toyota Safety Sense security systems (adaptive cruise control, auto-braking systems, lane keeping, etc.), plus a car valet is provided for cars (it can be controlled from a smartphone).

The V6 3.5 engine is excluded from the range. The fresh Toyota Alphard is equipped with a 2AR-FE 2.5 four-cylinder aspirated petrol (182 hp, 235 Nm), which is paired with a CVT. Vellfire, in the new generation, was awarded its own engine and gearbox: this MPV is equipped with a T24A-FTS 2.4 turbo four (279 hp, 430 Nm) and an eight-speed automatic. The hybrid installation also remained in service, it is common for the family: it includes an aspirated A25A-FX 2.5 (190 hp, 236 Nm), an electromechanical variator with an electric motor (182 hp, 270 Nm), a total return of 250 hp Minivans are available with front or all-wheel drive (all-wheel drive hybrids have a separate electric motor on the rear axle). Later models will receive a rechargeable hybrid version, but there is no information about it yet.

B Japan is already taking orders for new items. The Toyota Alphard costs between $38,000 and $61,400, while the Vellfire costs $46,100 to $62,800. The sales target is 8,500 minivans per month, with Alphard accounting for about 70%, according to Toyota's calculations.
