Mexico Mayor Marries Reptilian 'Princess' For Good Luck

The mayor of a small town in southern Mexico married a reptilian woman in a traditional ceremony to bring good luck to his people.

Victor Hugo Sosa, mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, an indigenous settlement of the people of Chontal, married a creature named Alicia Adriana.

The reptile is a caiman, an alligator-like inhabitant of the swamps, endemic to Mexico and Central America.

Sosa swore be true to what the locals call «princess girl».

“I take responsibility because we love each other. That's what's important. You can't have a marriage without love… I give in to marriage with a princess girl,» Sosa said during the ritual.

Marriage between a man and a caiman woman has been going on in this region for 230 years to commemorate day when two warring indigenous groups were peacefully united through marriage.

Legend has it that tensions were overcome when King Chontal, now incarnated as mayor, married a Uave indigenous princess, represented by an alligator woman.

The Uave live along the coast of Oaxaca. state, near the inner city on the isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico.

The wedding allows the parties to «associate with what is the emblem of Mother Earth, asking the omnipotent rain, the germination of the seed, all that is peace and harmony for a Chontal man,” explained Jaime Zarate, chronicler of San Pedro Huamelula.

Before the ceremony, the reptile was dressed in a green skirt, a colorful hand-embroidered tunic and a headdress made of ribbons and sequins, with a knotted muzzle to avoid premarital incidents.

That was then. taken home so that the locals could hold her and dance.

She was later dressed in a white bridesmaid outfit and taken to the town hall for a blessed occasion.

As part of the ritual, local fisherman Joel Vazquez cast his net and expressed the townspeople's hope that the marriage would bring “good fishing, so there will be prosperity, balance and ways to live in peace.”

After the wedding, the mayor danced with his bride to traditional music.

“We are happy because we are celebrating union of two cultures. People are happy,” Sosa told the AFP news agency.

When the dance ended, the mayor kissed the face of the “princess girl.”
