In the first half of 2023, the growth in the Russian tire market was 5% (compared to January-June last year) .
According to the report of the operator of the Chestny Znak marking system, in the first half of this year, the market for tires of all categories in the Russian Federation amounted to a total of about 24.1 million tires. This result turned out to be 5% more than in the first half of the crisis year of 2022. At the same time, a decline was recorded in the first quarter (in January-March, sales decreased by 8.5%), and in April-June, the volume of car tires sold increased by 16.4%.
The main part of the market is still accounted for by passenger tires: sales in retail in the second quarter of this year increased immediately by 64.4% (up to 5.8 million units). At the same time, the main share fell, which is logical, on summer tires (4.9 million units), because it is at this time that the tire change season takes place. In the second quarter, the average cost of summer tires grew by 1% (compared to January-March 2023).
According to Kommersant, if the current average cost on the tire market is compared with the price tag , operating during the same period last year, it will become clear that tires have fallen in price by 22% over the year.
According to the report, the volume of production of tires of all categories in the first half of the year fell by 27.5% and amounted to 14.2 million units. In the second quarter, a minus was recorded at the level of 13.2% (7.7 million tires were produced). Most of the market still consists of locally produced products, accounting for 10.4 million tires, while imports account for 6.4 million. It is worth noting that before the crisis, a smaller volume of products was imported, but at that time most of the local tires were produced in the Russian Federation by foreign companies that managed to sell their Russian business over the past year and a half.
It should be noted that the C8 Industrial Assets group not only acquired the local assets of Cordiant, but also received the rights to the Gislaved brand from Continental; as a result, in terms of capacity, it entered the top three manufacturers of automotive rubber in Russia. The group believes that customer demand in the premium tire segment is still unsatisfied, as most foreign brands have left the Russian market, and there are no alternatives to them yet.
In the first half of the year, Tatneft became the leader of the Russian tire market in terms of tire output: this year it bought a local plant from the Finnish tire manufacturer Nokian. In the future, this enterprise will produce products under the Ikon Tires brand (in the summer season of 2023, tires of the Nokian Tires brand were supplied). By the way, as part of the deal, the new owner received the Nordman brand, which he will be able to use in the future.
Recall that last spring it became known that the French tire company Michelin had also sold its business in the Russian Federation . Power International Tires LLC, a distributor of branded products, acted as a buyer. The list of assets included an enterprise located in the Moscow region (Davydovo), its production capacity is designed to produce up to 2 million tires per year.
