Archaeologists in Peru have discovered a 1,000-year-old mummy with her long hair intact.
The remains were found alongside ceramic vessels, textiles and other objects at Huaca Pucllana in the center of the wealthy Miraflores region in Lima, according to Mirella Ganoza, leader of the archaeological team.
“This is an adult in a sitting position with bent legs,” Ms. Ganoza said, noting that the mummy had long hair and almost elongated jaw. completely intact.
The discovered mummy lived perhaps as far back as a thousand years ago, at the beginning of the Ichsma culture, which developed on the central coast of modern Peru during a period of social reorganization before the arrival of the Incas. Mummies and ancient offerings have already been found at the site of Huaca Pucllana, and experts believe there are many more to be found.
Although best known for the royal Incan refuge of Machu atop Mount Picchu, Peru, was home to various pre-Hispanic cultures that flourished centuries before the Inca Empire took power, mostly along the country's central coast and in the Andes.
“I find it quite interesting, really. In the heart of Miraflores, in the city center, surrounded by modern buildings and structures, an important site still remains: the ceremonial center of Huaca Pucllana,” said Ms. Ganosa.
Lima, with a population of 10 million, Po Experts estimate that there are about 400 huacas, or sites with archaeological ruins, that can be seen in various areas.
