Scientists wondered about the mysterious doors
Archaeologist Zahi Hawass will lead a team of archaeologists on December 5 to unravel the main mystery of the Great Pyramid of Giza — where the mysterious doors lead. While scientists are wondering why they were made there and what is hidden behind them.
Former Egyptian Minister of State for Antiquities Zahi Hawass spoke to The Sun about his plans for the upcoming big mission. Hawass called the stone doors a major discovery that left him with more questions than answers. And so the archaeologist decided on December 5 to lead a team of his colleagues to solve this mystery.
“I think that so far the secret doors that I discovered inside the Great Pyramid are truly a discovery that requires answers. Inside the pyramid, I found the so-called three doors: one with two copper handles — at the southern entrance to the second chamber, twenty-one centimeters behind this door was found a second one, and in the northern tunnel a third one, also with two copper handles,” explains Hawass .
Several investigations have already been carried out around the doors, but no conclusion has been reached as to their purpose or what is actually hidden behind them.
One investigation involved creating a small hole in the first south door and sending people through it camera attached to the probe. Thus, the second door was discovered. It is suggested that there may even be a fourth door behind the north door, making the design symmetrical.
Hawass, speaking to The Sun, added: «It's really one of the most amazing things that makes me ask a lot of questions and expect a lot of answers.» He also hopes to «unravel the mystery of the Great Pyramid for the first time.»
The Great Pyramid (or Pyramid of Cheops) was built around 2570 BC as the final resting place of Pharaoh Khufu. It is known to contain three chambers, including the so-called Queen's Chamber, where three mysterious doors are located in two shafts opposite each other.
Hawass previously wrote about secret doors in an article for Guardian's Egypt: «We are planning clear the outside of the southern shaft to see if it opens to the outside. If this is the case, then it is possible that this was a symbolic door that the king could use to cross into the Underworld. If it is sealed, we will have to go back to the Westcar papyri and read how Khufu sought out the documents of the god Thoth to help him with his pyramid project. Only further exploration of the shafts can reveal their function and one of the many mysteries of the Great Pyramid.»
