Labor's by-election victories 'overshadowed by Tory defeats'

Sir Keir Starmer is now backing them to surpass Sir Tony Blair's record for most Labor Party seats in 1997 based on by-election results, a political betting analyst has said.

William Kejiyani, from bookmaker Star Sports, said: “We've been keeping a close eye on Labor Party movements and given their stunning success in the recent by-election, we've put Keir Starmer's Labor Party in four positions. by one to surpass Tony Blair's record of 419 seats at the next general election.

“Things appear to be going from bad to worse for current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as the Conservative Party suffered the biggest blow of any previous government since the 1960s, with 10 by-election losses in this parliament. Their chances of winning the most seats in the next general election are reduced to seven to one.»

On Friday, Labor's deputy national campaign coordinator said her party was «absolutely not complacent» despite by-election victories in Wellingborough and Kingswood.

Asked if Sir Keir Starmer had “drawn up the curtains” at No 10, Ellie Reeves told GB News: “We are not complacent about anything at all. This is a fantastic result for us here in Wellingborough, we fought for every vote and will fight for every vote at the next election.

“I was on the doorstep of Wellingborough and when you talk to voters they say, that they're fed up with the way the Conservatives are mismanaging the economy, people are paying more on their mortgages, we're in a recession now. , people think that they pay more and receive less.

“And that was the message loud and clear in this by-election. People just feel really fed up after 14 years of Tory rule. It feels like nothing is working, people can't get to see a doctor, hospital queues are sky-high, and people want change. We are a changed Labor Party and the results may vary.»

Sir Keir praised his party's performance in both polls, saying the victories proved the country was «hungry for change.»

< p >But Rishi Sunak, the prime minister, said the results, in which Tory losses were roughly double Labour's gains, showed there was «not much enthusiasm in Keir Starmer for an alternative.»

'Likely , Britain's next prime minister'

In Wellingborough, Labor won 45.9 percent of the vote, up almost 20 points on 2019. The Conservatives, by contrast, received 24.6 per cent, down 38 points from the last vote.

Labour did well in Kingswood. a smaller increase of about 12 points, while the number of conservative votes fell by 21.

Labor received fewer votes in Kingswood than in 2019, and only about 100 votes in Wellingborough, but this was partly due to significantly lower turnout, which is the norm for by-elections.

Sir John, professor of political science at University of Strathclyde, said the Tory losses were «the main headline».

He told the BBC: «You cannot take these two by-elections, given what we know and what the polls say, given the recent by-election results, to come to anything other than the conclusion that that the Conservatives have so far made little, if any, progress in reducing Labour's lead. have been participating in surveys for quite some time.”

He added: “It is of course interesting to note that the rise in the Labor vote in both constituencies is about half the fall in the Conservative vote. So essentially this is a series of two by-elections where the main headline is a Conservative defeat.»

But he said Labor could safely conclude that its chances of winning the next election were «not in the least not great at all.» meaning has diminished» and Sir Keir remains «the most likely next Prime Minister of Great Britain».

He called the Wellingborough vote a «highly commendable achievement» for the Labor Party.

“There is absolutely no doubt that Labor will be delighted with a very remarkable performance and the 19% increase in their support in Wellingborough in particular is highly commendable achievement,» he said.

«But in the end it's just overshadowed by the extent to which the electorate has rejected the Conservatives in this by-election: a 21-point drop in Kingswood and… that's a 38-point drop or a Fall up almost 38 points in Wellingborough is a record high.

“This breaks Christchurch's record back in 1992.”

Speaking on Friday morning, Mr Sunak said: “This shows that we have work to do to show people that we are delivering on their priorities, and that is what I am absolutely determined to do.

“But it also shows that there is not a lot of enthusiasm for the alternative from Keir Starmer and the Labor Party. And that's because they don't have a plan. And if you don't have a plan, you won't be able to make real change.”
