Compact “hydrocarbon” models of the Spanish brand Cupra, owned by the German concern Volkswagen, have undergone planned restyling and technical modernization in the spirit of the related VW Golf .
The Cupra Formentor and Cupra Leon crossovers, which are offered in five-door hatchback and station wagon (Sportstourer) bodies, are maximally unified in terms of technology, both models have been produced since 2020 and are built on the Volkswagen MQB Evo platform . The main carrier of this platform is the eighth generation VW Golf, which underwent restyling earlier this year, now it’s time for its Spanish relatives to update.

Formentor and Leon received a shark-style front end — at least that’s how the Seat press service describes it, which by inertia continues to serve the Cupra brand. The Cupra brand, we recall, split from Seat in 2018 and today is the main one for the Spanish wing of the Volkswagen concern; it is positioned as fashionable, sporty and youthful. The matrix headlights of the Formentor and Leon are completely new; only the LED filling of the headlights has changed. The rear bumpers now have more complex plastic; fake gills with reflectors have appeared on the sides.

In the interiors, which are almost identical in the Formentor and Leon, the palette of finishing materials has been updated, and there are more recycled materials in the fabrics. The updated multimedia screen has a diagonal of 12.9 inches and illuminated touch-sensitive temperature adjustment sliders underneath. The new top-end 390-watt audio system with 12 speakers is supplied by Sennheiser. The range and functionality of electronic driver assistants has been expanded.

The wide range of power units for Formentor and Leon has been preserved, while the top versions have become more powerful. The base engine for both models is a 1.5-liter TSI petrol turbo-four with 150 hp. paired with a 6-speed “mechanics” or a 7-speed “robot” DSG, and in combination with a “robot”, the 1.5 TSI engine is supplemented with a mild hybrid makeweight in the form of a 48-volt starter-generator and a small buffer battery.

The 2.0 TSI petrol engine on younger versions now produces 204 hp. (before restyling it was 190 hp), it comes complete with a 7-speed DSG gearbox and 4Drive all-wheel drive with a power take-off clutch to the rear axle. The same power unit is used in the “hottest” version of the VZ, but here the 2.0 TSI engine is boosted to 333 hp. (+23 hp compared to the pre-restyling version), and the all-wheel drive system has two individual power take-off clutches for the left and right rear wheels; these clutches simulate the operation of an active differential; powerful Akebono brakes are available for an additional fee.

The Formentor VZ crossover is also available in a front-wheel drive version with a 265-horsepower 2.0 TSI engine and a 7-speed DSG robot. On the front-wheel drive Leon VZ hatchback, the 2.0 TSI engine produces 300 hp, and the 7-speed DSG robot is complemented by a self-locking differential.
Two plug-in hybrid versions are made on the basis of a 1.5 TSI petrol engine and a 6-speed DSG “robot”, into which an electric motor is implanted; both versions have front-wheel drive. The maximum output of the power plant of the younger hybrid is 204 hp, while that of the older sports VZ e-Hybrid is 272 hp. (before restyling it was 245 hp). A new traction battery with a capacity of 19.7 kWh allows you to travel more than 100 km on a single charge exclusively on electric power.

The 2.0-liter remains in service TDI turbodiesel with 150 hp in combination with a 7-speed DSG gearbox and front-wheel drive, but it will not be offered in all European countries.
Prices for the updated Cupra Formentor and Cupra Leon have not yet been announced; sales will begin only in the third quarter of the current year.
