The Romanian brand Dacia, part of the Renault Group, has launched a radically updated electric cross-hatchback Spring: at the moment it is the cheapest full-fledged car with an electric powertrain in Europe and is generously equipped with active and passive safety systems.
The premiere of the updated Dacia Spring took place in February, and yesterday it began accepting orders, the model configurators went live on Dacia consumer sites in Europe. As an example, as usual, we take Germany, since it is, firstly, the largest car market in Europe, and secondly, prices for new cars here are often lower than in other EU countries.
The updated Dacia Spring in the basic Essential 45 package costs in Germany from 16,900 euros. The only cheaper electric trains on the market here are quads — for example, Opel Rocks (from 7,999 euros), but due to their limited technical characteristics you won’t go far, and the equipment is frankly meager. Dacia Spring, in turn, is a full-fledged car, it can be driven on the highway and generally used every day and in any weather.

The basic Dacia Spring Essential 45 is equipped with a single electric motor on the front axle, its power is 44 hp, not 45, as the index seems to promise. This cross-hatchback accelerates to 100 km/h in a long 19.1 seconds, with a top speed of 125 km/h. A full battery charge with a useful capacity of 26.8 kWh is enough for 225 km of range in the WLTP cycle, the maximum charging power is only 3.7 kW. The overall length of the electric vehicle is 3701 mm, the wheelbase is 2423 mm. The salon is designed for four, the trunk volume is 308 liters, with the backrest of the rear sofa folded down — 1004 liters.

Standard equipment on the Dacia Spring Essential 45 includes six airbags, advanced automatic emergency braking (AEB), traffic sign recognition, driver fatigue monitoring, lane keeping assist, rear parking sensors, cruise control and an emergency call button — This is all a consequence of the introduction of new safety standards GSR2 (Global Safety Rule 2) in Europe. In all other respects, the Spring Essential 45 looks downright naked: there is no air conditioning, rear door windows “on oars,” manually adjustable exterior mirrors, a solid rear seat back, a simple audio system with Bluetooth connectivity instead of a multimedia screen. For an additional fee, a 35-liter front luggage compartment (179 euros), roof rails (249 euros), a 6.5 m charging cable (627 euros) and various accessories-holders for the interior are offered at prices ranging from 19 to 49 euros per piece.< br />

The top-end Dacia Spring Extreme 65 costs in Germany from 19,900 euros: the power of the electric motor here is increased to 65 hp, the acceleration time to “hundreds” is reduced to 13.7 s. The battery is the same as in the “base”, but the range on one charge is a little longer — 228 km according to the WLTP cycle, maximum charging power — 30 kW. Standard equipment of the Extreme 65 version includes copper decor on the body and interior, air conditioning, a 10-inch multimedia screen, power mirrors, pockets in the backs of the front seats and other small amenities.

Dacia Spring is still produced in China, without which, apparently, such affordable prices would not be possible. For comparison, let's say that the new Citroen e-C3 of Slovak assembly costs in Germany from 23,300 euros, but it is larger (4015 mm in length), more powerful (113 hp) and longer-range (42 kWh, 320 km on one charge). Next year, the initial version of the Citroen e-C3 will hit the market with a range of 200 km on one charge and a price of 19,990 euros, but the Dacia Spring in the “base” is still cheaper.
