A diamond battery that has served for 28 thousand years has been called a replacement for gasoline and electricity.

The last few years have been marked by the development of batteries for electric vehicles . A battery that can last 28,000 years sounds like science fiction.

The diamond battery is planned to be made from nuclear waste. This is the proposal of the Californian startup Nano Diamond Battery (NDB), which already had a prototype called “Diamond Nuclear Voltaic”.

In the case of electric vehicles, NDB nanobatteries provide autonomy for 90 years. The new NDB battery is supposed to get its energy from recycled radioactive isotopes that come from nuclear waste, such as radioactive graphite.

Each element will consist of monocrystalline diamond, which absorbs isotope energy. Because they have a lifespan of several thousand years, their creators «guarantee» that they will continue to emit energy and the battery will never need to be recharged.

The thermal conductivity of microscopic diamonds allows heat to be transferred away from radioactive isotopes once electricity is generated . The layer of polycrystalline diamond that serves as the cover for the battery contains radiation inside.

Its material is 12 times stronger than stainless steel. As the California-based company explains, the piece was «completely safe» for humans because the radioactive diamond was coated with multiple layers of «extremely durable» synthetic diamonds.

The synthetic diamonds were supposedly coated to prevent leakage. Moreover, the NDB would certify that the radiation levels in the cell are lower than those in the human body, making it safe for use in smartphones or laptops.

“From an application perspective, this battery could be promising in aerospace industry, as well as in the automotive industry, consumer electronics or medical equipment (pacemakers, hearing aids),” say company representatives.

But the diamond battery was not produced. Why if he was so promising? As a result, everything turned into a large-scale scam that brought millions of dollars in losses to investors, and the startup developer was exposed and an investigation was launched against him.
